History [edit]
1997–1999: Formation, commercial success and Step 1 [edit]
Steps were formed by Steve Crosby & Barry Upton (writers of "5,half dozen,7,8") alongside manager Tim Byrne after auditioning hopefuls who answered an advertizement in The Stage newspaper. Byrne had previously been involved in the production of the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, the BBC collaboration with the pop mag, Nail Hits.
Afterward auditions, the original line-upwards of Watkins, Scott-Lee, Derek O'Brien, Maddy Chan, and Mitch Stevens was finalised and the band started shooting promotional images and recording tracks.[4] However, O'Brien, Chan and Stevens left, every bit they wanted more than a one-striking wonder, and saw no long-term time to come with Steps. New auditions were held on 7 May 1997, and in conjunction with the manufacturers, they selected Tozer, Latchford-Evans and Richards as the remaining members.[5]
Their outset single "v,half-dozen,7,8" was a techno line trip the light fantastic song. Though not typical of what became their style, information technology was their first hit both in the Britain and internationally. The track remains i of the highest-selling singles never to accomplish the meridian 10 on the UK Singles Chart. Its release in Australia gave the group their first number i in 1998.
Tim Byrne then founded a direction and production company, Byrne Blood, with former BMG head of marketing and video, Victoria Blood, which took over sole management of Steps and was as well instrumental in the creation and management of A1.
The group were then presented to popular impresario, Pete Waterman who signed them to his Eastern Block Unity Label (EBUL) in a partnership with his long time assembly, Jive Records. Waterman and his new PWL product partners, Mark Topham and Karl Twigg, reworked the "5,half-dozen,7,eight" demo, introducing the prominent fiddle into the arrangement. Waterman stated that whilst he was pleased with the final mix of "5,half-dozen,7,eight", his co-producers were less and so, to the extent that on the single liner notes they did not take a credit, although they were credited on all subsequent releases, such every bit the Pace One album. Waterman further stated that he signed Steps under the absolute status that he had complete creative control of all Steps' studio recordings, with the intention of recreating the sound of ABBA and blending it with a more modern dance pop style.[ citation needed ] He oft referred to the grouping as "ABBA on speed".[ citation needed ] In April 1998, Steps launched their 2d single, a cover version of Bananarama's "Last Matter on My Heed", which became their offset UK top ten, peaking at number half dozen.
